PhytoAPP 3rd Workshop at DeepTechLab

The 3rd Workshop of the PhytoAPP project was held on April 15, 2025, at DeepTechLab, Lusófona University in Lisbon, Portugal. The event was organized by NANOTECHCENTER in collaboration with DeepTechLab/Lusófona. The PhytoAPP project is funded by the European Executive Research Agency of the European Commission and is coordinated by Professor Sergiy Lyubchyk from Lusófona University.

The primary objective of the workshop was to assess the current status and progress of the project’s Work Packages (WPs) and to discuss strategic directions for their completion, with particular focus on the remaining project timeline leading to its conclusion in February 2026. Detailed presentations were delivered mainly by the WP leaders, highlighting key achievements, ongoing activities, challenges, and future plans. The following finished and ongoing Work Packages were addressed:

  • WP1: Advanced Materials Reference Onset Elaboration
  • WP2: Comprehensive Studies on Inhibition of Amyloid Fibrils Formation
  • WP3: Novel Materials Preclinical Studies
  • WP4: Innovative Materials Fabrication
  • WP5: Novel PhytoAPP Products Specification and Certification for Medical Application
  • WP6: Management, Dissemination, and Public Engagement
The workshop concluded with a roundtable discussion focused on cross-WP integration, knowledge exchange, and planning. Key topics included upcoming scientific research activities, staff exchange/mobility, dissemination efforts, and preparations for the final project conference. Communication strategies and visibility tools were also discussed to maximize the project's outreach and impact.

The workshop was attended by representatives of all consortium partners, either in person or remotely. The following institutions were represented, namely: COFAC/Lusófona University (Ulusófona,PT), NANOTECHCENTER LLC (UA), Ústav Experimentálnej Fyziky Slovenskej Akadémie Vied – UEF SAV (IEP, SK), The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Oxford (UOXF, UK), Cascatachuva Lda (PT), Republican State Enterprise with the Right of Economic Authority Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda State University of the Ministry of Education and Science (KKSU, KZ), and the National Nuclear Research Center CJSC under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan (NNRC, AZ).

The PhytoAPP project aims to develop inhibitors of amyloid fibril formation to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Using nanotechnology, the goal is to overcome the limitations of phytochemicals, such as low water solubility, improving bioavailability, stability, and reducing toxicity. The work includes synthesizing nano-enabled phytocomplexes, in vitro and in vivo testing, and preparations for scaling up nanopharmaceutical production, including pilot line development and clinical testing.
